Introducing the letter H

This past week, we focused on the letter H. I thought I would share some of what we did when learning about this letter. Not every part of our day is mentioned, like outdoor play time, because – well, because it was play time.

Gathering Activity– We built houses with Lincoln Logs.

Circle Time – After calendar, I introduced the letter H. We saw what it looked like on our alphabet wall. We made the sound and thought of lots of words that begin with H.

We talked about the houses that we live in and described them to each other. We talked about other types of homes, such as apartments. We then moved on to talk about animal homes. We read the book A House For Hermit Crab by Eric Carle. We also read Harold and The Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson.

Desk Work– We did a tracing page for the letter H. (I like the one’s found here, but there are several others that could be used.)  One day, we drew pictures on blank paper with a purple crayon, like Harold. The other day was spent decorating our own “shells.” We made these out of scrap papers and other random items. Everyone was given the opportunity to choose whatever they wanted to put on their shell.

Art Time – We painted wooden bird houses. We also made hats out of newspaper and then decorated them with crayons and stickers. See directions here.
